City OKs new d-town parking plan

Sanford City Commissioners approved a deal Monday night to add public parking in the heart of downtown.

The city plans to lease 6 privately-owned parcels totaling .58 acres
located at the southwest corner of Palmetto Avenue and 2nd Street. The term of the lease is 5 years at $15,600 per year. The lease will be prorated for this fiscal year at $3,900.

Sanford Public Works Director Bilal Iftikhar estimates the property will accommodate 68 vehicles.

Before the public can begin parking in the lot, Iftikhar said the city will take core samples to make sure there are no environmental issues.

In addition, the city will spend about $46,000 to demoliish part of the concrete surface, repair and overlay asphalt, and install signage and striping.

Barring any unforeseen issues, Iftikhar expects the lot to be operational in about 3 months.

  1. Too much for too little. The current lots downtown are worth keeping at these prices. Give away stuff to spend money leasing? Who’s running this show?
