Listen to the stories about Bernard David “Buddy” Lake and you assume the tales are baseball’s version of Paul Bunyon: outrageous feats of athleticism that are more fiction than fact.

That is until you realize Lake’s accomplishments were performed in front of thousands of people on such a regular basis, that they almost became commonplace.

Through the years Sanford residents have watched their share of local baseball players blossom into professional stars.

That tradition continues tonight as the Sanford River Rats host the Winter Park Diamond Dogs at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium (Gmap) in a rematch of last year’s championship game of the Florida Collegiate Summer League.
